Frequently Asked Questions
Will all my mail be forwarded to the new address?
Yes, all your mail will be forwarded to your new mailing address after the USPS processes your request. Though bills and magazines will also be sent to your forwarding address, notifying those business and companies directly of your new address can help ensure delivery and accuracy of records.
When will the USPS change my address?
It may take up to 10 business days for the USPS to process your change of address, depending on when you requested mail forwarding to start. We recommend submitting a change of address request at least 2 weeks in advance. If you do not receive mail at your new address 10 days after the start date you requested, please contact the US Postal Service directly.
Will my magazines be forwarded to my new address?
Magazines and periodicals will be forwarded to your new mailing address for 60 days. Feel free to contact the magazine company directly so they can update their records with your new address if it is a permanent move.
Will I receive confirmation that my address has been changed?
You should receive a letter from the USPS at your old address to validate your move. This letter will not show your new mailing address to protect your privacy. You should also receive a confirmation letter or welcome kit from the USPS after your address has been changed.
Can somebody else change my address for me?
The change of address form should only be completed by the person requesting the change. On the change of address form, you will have to authorize that you are the person for whom mail should be forwarded. It is a federal offense for impersonators or others to submit the form under false pretenses and may be subject to punishment or imprisonment.
Should I change my address if I am moving temporarily?
If you plan to make a temporary move of 6 months or less, you can have your mail forwarded during that time using change of address. For temporary moves longer than 6 months, please contact the USPS for an extension on your temporary forward.
